STOUDT’S Abbey Double Ale

“Abbey Double’s smooth, well-developed malty character is full and robust. A sharp, nutty aspect becomes apparent just as a light spice bite eases onto the front of the tongue. The rich, dark-garnet body gains depth of flavor while a blended, peppery spiciness in the swallow accents the full-bodied, malty mouthfeel. STOUDT’S Abbey Triple Ale

“This Belgian-style ale’s light, spicy aroma accompanies a smooth texture and a dash of yeast-inspired spicy bite on the tongue. The placid, copper-colored body leaves a pleasant fruity sweetness in the aftertaste. There is a suggestion of clove buried deep within the medium-bodied mouthfeel. An assertive bitterness becomes apparent after mid-bottle, followed by a sugary aspect closer to the end. Stout’s finishes complex, moderately bitter, and flush with alcohol. このビールの醸造所は、ペンシルベニアのダッチ・カントリー、ランカスターとレディングの中間辺りにある。本当は実際に現地に行ってマイクロ・ブルーでジョッキで試飲してみたいのだが、折角アーミッシュの住む土地に出かけても、子供達の関心はむしろストラスバーグの鉄道関連施設であって、そこでさんざん遊ぶと、もうマイクロ・ブルーで一杯飲むのに付き合ってくれるような優しさはうちの子供達には未だない。でも、地元に行って出来たてのビールを飲むのはなかなか美味しいものである。

さて、この「スタウト」、禁酒法時代以来、アメリカで唯一、キャロル・スタウトという女性のブルーマスター（醸造責任者）を戴く醸造所として有名である。１９８７年開業と歴史は浅いが、既に各種のビール・コンテストで入賞して、着実な実績を挙げている。どの銘柄も評価は高く、The Beer Lover’s Rating Guideには３銘柄しか紹介されていないが、いずれも３点台後半から４点台前半の評価を受けている。ペンシルベニア産ビールとしては、「イングリング」には売上は負けているかもしれないが、「イングリング」が比較的薄めのラガーであるのに対して、「スタウト」は比較的濃いエールが専門領域なのかなという感じがする。確かに美味しいです。

「スタウト」のビールは未だ数種類しか飲んだことがない。もっと極めてもいいかもしれないなと「スカーレット・レディ」を飲みながら感じた。「スカーレット・レディ」は、ワシントン界隈では「トータル・ワイン」でしか見かけないが、ラベルがアルフォンス・ミュシャの女性画のようで、とても印象的なデザインだ。女性経営者のセンスを感じる。
